It's Friday, Friday!

Friday at our school we did more teaching.  I created a CHAMPS board that my teacher can keep after I leave and used it again with my students.  It is really working wonders with the classroom management.  I taught a lesson on good listening skills.  I had the students interview a partner and then introduce their partner to the class.  This is an idea I got from one of my favorite professors, Dominique Dieffenbach.

My CHAMPS board and lesson :)

Melissa and one of our favorite little guys :)

Before lunch, a group of Garifuna drummers and dancers came to perform for the school, to continue teaching the children about their culture because of the upcoming holiday.

Cheryna danced when they asked for a dancer from UNF :)

Lunch was provided again by Roxanna, our favorite lunch lady!

Melissa and I each ate eight salbutes.  No shame.

Podge and her plantains

After school, we walked back to the hotel.  It was a beautiful walk and we enjoyed strolling through the neighborhood like locals ;)

We were excited to walk home.  Some of us skipped.

There is a stream near the school where the local women wash clothes

  2. Conversation
    Help
    Activity
    Movement
    Participation

We use CHAMPs to set the expectations we have for our students. Then we can say, "Are you following CHAMPs/ being a CHAMP?" An example of how I use this at the beginning of each lesson:

Me- "For this lesson, our Conversation is voice level....?"
Students- "Zero" (this means no talking; for some activities we use level one which is talking quietly to a partner or group)
    Me- "If you need help...?"
Students- "Raise your hand and wait"
    Me- "Our activity is..."
Students- "Social Studies" (or whatever subject we are studying)
    Me- "Movement..."
    Students- "None"
    Me- "Participation..."
Students- "Following directions, eyes on teacher, ears listening"

    Hope that helps :)
